I think it’s definitely gone away. I think the main thing people thought was that we wouldn’t be around for a long time. We are as popular now as we’ve ever been. As for being accepted, I guess we really worried about it when we were younger, but it doesn’t bother us now. As long as we are still selling out our shows, and kids are still coming, we don’t really mind.”

Short Stack’s vocalist and songwriter Shaun Diviney is talking about the early barrage of hatred the band received. They were easy enough targets: the unashamed sugar-rush of their sound, their adoption of emo aesthetics, the hordes of visible, audible teenage fans – but this attitude obscured the fact Short Stack put the hard yards in, from riding trains for years to spending every waking hour building a large following via social media. Their second album This Is Bat Country silenced most critics who assumed they would be a flash in the pan, while the indie elite found different targets for their vitriol. “It sold more copies than the first album by like, second week,” explains Diviney. “It’s almost double Platinum and the other one only went Gold. We consider it a massive success.”

Yet, two days after this interview took place rapper 360 uploaded an embarrassing, inarticulate Youtube rant titled Fuck Shortstack [sic] that backfired royally when Diviney uploaded his response: a whip-smart parody of 360 that could very well be the best career move the band have made in quite some time. It will certainly endear them to people who had written them off as faceless bandwagon-hoppers. This accidental stop-gap should sate fans until the release of their third album, which is slated for a March 2012 release. Diviney highlights another shift, from the dark widescreen dramatics of This Is Bat Country to a more stadium-sized sound, namechecking The Police and U2 (in particular The Edge shimmering guitar lines) as key reference points. The band’s September single Bang Bang Sexy, however, acts more as a diversion than a showcase of their new wares.

“Bang Bang isn’t really representative of the album at all, we actually did that song for fun. The whole album’s a lot more rocky I feel. It’s the heaviest stuff the band’s ever done and Bang Bang is kinda the opposite of it, so it contradicts that,” he laughs. Possible next single Suburbia is described by Diviney as “sort of like a Bruce Springsteen type of thing,” and it seemingly finds the band stretching out in the studio a bit more.

“We sort of went a little bit Pink Floyd on it, we got this children’s choir in, that sort of thing. I think we’ve just… the label now just gives money to do whatever we want, so every stupid idea, we put in,” he laughs.

The bigger sound is due in no small part to the augmentation of their live sound to include a second guitarist and a keyboardist. These extra elements have helped the band grow sonically.

“There’s lots of input from these extra musicians, not so much for the melody or the structure [of a song] but more with the arrangement and the dynamics of it, which has never happened before.

“We’re on the third album now, the last album was an answer, the first album we were young and now for this album we are just being ourselves. It has all the elements that I like in rock and we’ve thrown it all together.”

Another milestone for the band also occurred a few days after this interview, when the band headlined their first ever over 18s shows in Sydney and Melbourne. Diviney’s anxiety at this prospect really hammers home the fact that the band are barely out of their teens. “I’m kind of nervous, “ he admits, “but at the end of the day it is a Short Stack show, so they are going to be Short Stack fans. There’ll be people buying drinks from the bar, too, which has never really happened before!”

A WAR has erupted between opposing Aussie artists Short Stack and 360, with both firing off vitriolic insults at each other in online video diaries that has the social media world abuzz.

Both in the running for Channel [V] Oz Artist of The Year award, the battle began this week when rapper 360 – Melbourne hip hopper Matt Colwell – uploaded a curious YouTube rant titled “F … Short Stack”, slamming his competitors in an abusive tirade, the majority of which Confidential cannot print.

“Everytime I hear a Short Stack song I wanna chop off my c … and throw it into heavy traffic on a freeway,” he said.

While the Newcastle pop rock band have polarised many in the music industry world thanks to their “emo” image and tween fandemonium, 360′s unprovoked attack led lead singer Shaun Diviney to hit back with an imitation video.

In it Diviney calls 360 a “munted dopey c … on the internet”.

Having established themselves on MySpace, the majority of Short Stack’s supporters are Twitter fanatics, who have bombarded 360 with hate mail and the occasional death threat since the video went viral.

While 360 did not return our calls yesterday, Short Stack told us everything they wanted to say was in their video.

Other than that, filling Super Soakers with piss and spraying Short Stack in the face with it was up there.

Aussie tweens just can’t get enough of pop rockers Short Stack – and if you’re one of them, well now’s your chance to see the talented trio live in action!

The Sydney-born band have just kicked off their ‘This Is Bat Country 2011,’ tour and are taking their awesome stage show across Australia this July.

Spilling the deets on what Stackheads can expect from their high energy gigs, singer Shaun Diviney spilled in a video blog uploaded to YouTube,

“The main thing is this is the biggest tour we’ve ever done…and I think we’ve really found our stride as a band.”

And with two smash hit albums and a stint supporting US rockers Good Charlotte already under their belts – just how are the group handling all the attention that comes with their ever-growing success?

“It’s an out-of-body experience,” Shaun told the Penrith Press. “We’re a lot older now but it’s something you can’t really get used to. We try and treat it likes it’s part of the job.”

And dishing on what’s next for the three-piece after they’ve stepped down from their tour bus, he added on his video blog,

“It’s going to be a new song, it’ll hopefully be out before the end of the year. It’s lots of fun, it sort of reminds me of ‘Sway Sway Baby’ part 2 in a way.”

After a week of intense “Short Stack Boot Camp” band training i.e. Shaun, Bradie & Andy teaching Matty & Maude everything from how to deal with screaming girls to how to bag the perfect groupie (Bradie noting cleavage is a very important factor), they were ready to take stage in support of the boys: Matty on backup vocals & Maude on percussion (AKA triangle).

Matty’s vocal chords were exercised and Maude’s fingers were prepped to triangle the shit of anything that crossed her path…

But as it turned out the Short Stack boys had something else in store… something big, furry and completely concealing…

Every teenager in Melbourne was at one place last night.. And that was at Festival Hall in Melbourne for Short Stack’s second stop of their “This Is Bat Country 2011 Tour”. Playing to a variety crowd of teenagers, tweens and even parents. REVIEW:

Thousands of teenage girls in black t-shirts congregating at Festival Hall could only mean one thing — Short Stack were in town. And it was with a lot of excitement that I joined the audience at the Melbourne leg of their ‘This Is Bat Country’ Australian tour.

Short Stack are probably the hottest young band in Australia right now — and I don’t just mean talented. They are seriously good looking boys. Of course Short Stack fans have to choose a favourite. It’s practically a rule. Singer Shaun Diviney, bass guitarist Andy Clemmensen and drummer Bradie Webb each have their own group of obsessive fans who want to marry them. I still haven’t picked a favourite, but when I do I will be tweeting like crazy at my chosen boy.
Festival Hall was packed out with teenage girls. Sure there were a few boys in the crowd — but not many. There were also plenty of parents standing along the edges of the floor while their kids battled their way to the front of the crowd. The excitement of the audience was highlighted when one of Short Stack’s team did a microphone test and said each of the band member’s names. The girls went wild.

And then it was time. Short Stack had arrived. The boys kicked things off with ‘We Dance To A Different Disco Honey’, and then quickly followed it up with ‘Are You Afraid Of The Dark’. The crowd were beside themselves with excitement, and it seemed like everyone knew every single word.

Highlights included the recent singles ‘Heartbreak Made Me A Killer’ and ‘Planets’ as well as the classic track ‘Shimmy A Go Go’. There was a good mix of their older songs as well as newer tracks from ‘This Is Bat Country’. And the crowd went absolutely mental when they played ‘Princess’, which must still be one of their most popular songs.

Drummer Bradie got the chance to shine with a rocking solo to Kanye West and Daft Punk’s ‘Stronger’. And Shaun slowed things down a bit when he took to the stage on his own with an acoustic guitar.

I’m definitely not a newcomer to the Stack. I actually saw them way back in 2009 when they were supporting The Veronicas at the Palais, along with Metro Station (RIP). Back then ‘Princess’ was their hot new single, and they had so much hair that there wasn’t room for anything else on the stage.

Well the boys have toned down the hair since then, but they still know how to rock. And their performance at Festival Hall proved that the fans who supported them back then have multiplied by the thousands. The place was packed out, and the screaming was louder than a Justin Bieber concert.

Short Stack delivered a great show that really proved what a musical force they have become. I think we’ll be hearing a lot more from these boys in the future.

POP/ROCK band Short Stack dropped by the Inner West Courier office to have a chat to reporter SHIREEN KHALIL about their upcoming Australian tour This Is Bat Country and how they managed to become one of the country’s biggest bands despite a rocky road.

SHORT Stack went from performing Green Day covers in their garages to fronting their own music on stages around Australia. But it was not an easy journey.

The group of three, who met on a train on the way to their Newcastle school, entered youth competitions as young teens, only to get knocked back time after time.

But, like most successful bands, they never gave up.

“It’s a lot of work, I think a lot of people underestimate how much effort and time you have to put into it, you can’t wait for it to happen to you, you have to go for it.”

The band powered on until they were recognised and Andy Clemmensen (backing vocals, bass) mainly gave credit to their fans.

“It’s our fan base who have encouraged us to keep on going,” he said.

Now they are making headlines all over the country from their pop hooks and rock attitude to their cheeky exuberance and supporting bands like Good CharlotteIf you’ve been living under a rock, they are the boys behind the platinum selling single Planets, which is off their hugely successful and latest album This is Bat Country.

It also happens to be lead vocalist Shaun Diviney’s favourite song (nothing to do with the fact he wrote it, of course).

The threesome are looking forward to their tour.

Diviney described it as their biggest ever.

When the Central Coast rockers blitzed the charts with their debut record Stack Is The New Black in 2009, they were savaged by critics and dismissed by their peers.

Two years later and their second album This Is Bat Country has notched gold sales, the single Planets went platinum and they graced the coveted cover of Rolling Stone.

Frontman Shaun Diviney, bassist Andy Clemmensen and drummer Bradie Webb are far from the one-hit wonders many pundits predicted.

“The only time hate would really affect us would be if it came from someone who was in a better position than us,” Clemmensen said.

“It seems to always come from people who … seem jealous of what we have achieved.”

The trio, who formed at a Newcastle high school, were one of the first Australian bands to harness social media to build their fanbase.

Their Short Stack TV channel on YouTube has received almost eight million views.

Short Stack kick off their This Is Bat Country tour at the Enmore Theatre on July 1.

The Daily Telegraph’s music editor Kathy McCabe put your fan questions to the band. Q&A straight after the jump…

Short Stack are about to hit the road for their This Is Bat Country national tour. The album has notched up gold sales and the Planets single scored them a platinum plaque.

Before they jump into the tour van, thetelegraph.com.au asked Shaun, Bradie and Andy the questions you have always want to put to them.

After we asked a couple of our own, of course.

Kathy: It has already been a big year – what has been the highlight?
Shaun: I think for me it would be when we were on the cover of Rolling Stone. It’s nuts. It’s something you can’t work towards, it seems so unattainable. we used to say it as a joke “Yeah, we’ll get on the cover of Rolling Stone”. And then it happened.

Kathy: And you were just out on the Good Charlotte tour?
Shaun: Those dudes are so cool. At every stage in our career they seem to be there. When we were starting out – we were still doing our HSC – we did a gig with them in Brisbane and here we are on our second album and we did the tour with them. They show you what you should be like in their situation; they are so humble.
Bradie: They have been an inspiration to us, we really looked up to them when we were younger.

Kathy: So guys, ready for the fan questions? Let’s start with Jaylee.
Jaylee: When on tour what do you do before a show?
Shaun: We don’t have any crazy antics, we usual do knuckles like in Mighty Ducks which is a bit stupid.
Bradie: Sometimes it’s a little brutal but because we’re girls it’s more like a broken nail.

Lavonne wants to know what are your opinions about the fan fiction online?
Shaun: I didn’t even know what fan fiction was until kids started telling me about it.
Andy: I read my first fan fiction recently and it scared the hell out of me. Some of the things these kids come up with are a little bit creepy and kinda scary. Just inter-relations between the three of us and members of their family. It scared me. I don’t think I slept that night.

Lots of ladies want to know what do you do in your spare time?
Shaun: We’re so busy that when we have a week off, it feels like we’ve had a year off and you start going crazy at home after a couple of days.
Bradie: Like most young adults, we’ll go to the beach, I play a lot of Playstation…I think we have to accept the fact we’re not grown ups yet – we try to be.

Joanna asked where do you see yourselves in 10 years’ time?
Andy: I think we all try to live each day as it comes. We try not to get too caught up in what we can be or can’t be.
Shaun: Silverchair is a good example – we went to school in Newcastle and they are gods there. So we hope to be doing the same thing in 10 years except we’ll be fatter and balder.

Georgia: Are you going to do meet and greets for everyone who hangs around after the show?
Shaun: It’s not so much meet and greets but hanging out and having photos with the kids who hang around afterwards. That’s one of the coolest parts about doing the shows; I love it. In Melbourne, there can be 1000 kids out the back of the gig. If they come to the gig and wait out in the cold, the least we can do is have a photo with them.

Kristy: Which one of your videos was the most fun to make?
I would say Heartbreak Made Me A Killer because we went to Cambodia for that. It was so overwhelming _ looking back it seems unbelievable we even did it. In four days, we went to Singapore, Cambodia and back, it was absolutely crazy.

A lot of your fans wanted to know what job would you have taken if you weren’t in a band?
Shaun: I was doing a Bachelor Of Communications at university. I would probably be getting your coffee.
Bradie: I wanted to be a primary school teacher but I don’t know how good I would have been at it. I think I can only hit things and make loud noises for a living.
Andy: I would like to be a radio presenter.

Cat: If you guys get starstruck and if you do, what do you to handle it?
Shaun: I lost my shit when we met Mark Hoppus from Blink 182 at the MTV awards a couple of years ago – wow, we’re getting old. We didn’t know what to do. You want to talk to them but you don’t want to talk to them for too long so you don’t make an idiot of yourself. You try to play it cool but you can’t. As weird as it sounds, you just want to watch them, just walking. Wow, he walks like a normal person.

Charlotte: What do you guys like best about each other?
Bradie: Shaun’s eyes – they are the only reason I wake up in the morning.
Shaun: I like how Bradie’s shirts always have sleeves which are a little too short.
Bradie: I like to show some skin for this man.
Andy: I got nothing. It’s hard to find something nice to say about someone you have to put up with every single day. All you look at are the negatives and how much of a jerk they are.

Samara: What is the best show you have ever done and why was it so good?
We did a show at Festival Hall (Melbourne) during our Stack Is The New Black tour and it was the second show we had done there and it was absolutely nuts. For some reason everything went right. We’re going to film our DVD there this time. And we’ve found when we go to rural towns to play gigs, the kids there go nuts too.

Shantelle: How does it feel to know that you impact so heavily on people’s lives whether it be your music, Short Stack TV replying to them on Twitter or Facebook or just generally bringing a smile to the face of those who often have no other reason to smile?
Shaun: It’s indescribable really (to contemplate) that we have that affect on people. Some kids have our lyrics tattooed on their body which is just insane – insane to think that something you have created can impact someone in a positive way. It’s really why you do it – you do it, because you love music.

Lauren: What guys do you like most about touring?
Shaun: The shows. It’s pretty much our job is to hang out with our best friends. We take all our friends on the road with us and it’s one giant party. It’s awesome.
Bradie: Each of us has such a love of playing and the fact we get to do that so often and make people happy doing that is amazing.

Maddie: What is like having girls run after you and scream your name? Is it hard going out with friends when the fans come up and ask for a photo and other stuff.
Shaun: Yeah but it comes with the territory.
Bradie: I don’t think we have it that bad. Watching the Bieber stuff on the news, that’s how it used to be for us a couple of years ago but as we grow up, our fans do and now they are coming up to us in a bar and saying thanks for that album last year, it was awesome, see ya. that’s different.
Andy: I really like it when they come up. It’s cool and humbling and makes you look good in front of your friends. But if they’re being a bit fanatical, that can get a little bit embarrassing sometimes but, whatever.

Brigid: What’s the best comeback you’ve managed to give a hater?
Shaun: We’ve got a couple of gold records. It really used to bother of us but now it doesn’t so much. I can’t imagine being that annoyed with something someone said that I would comment negatively on Youtube or something. I can’t really relate to it now.
Andy: I think the only time hate would really affect us would be if it came from someone who was in a better position than us. It seems to always come from people who, at the end of the day, seem to be a bit jealous of what we have achieved.

The Australian ‘Heartbreak Made Me A Killer’ band, which consists of Shaun Diviney, Andy Clemmensen and Bradie Webb, said that brothers Benji and Joel Madden are very down-to-earth despite their success.

Diviney told The Daily Telegraph: “Those dudes are so cool. At every stage of our career they always seem to be there. When we first started out, we played a gig in Brisbane with them and now we’ve toured with them. It’s really cool.

“They’re down-to-earth guys… they show you what you should be like in their situation and they’re so humble. The idea [to write some songs with them] was definitely being thrown around [but] I think we’re way down the list!”

The group also revealed that being on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine earlier this year was “nuts”. Diviney said: “It’s something that you don’t really work towards because it seems so unobtainable so we were over the moon. We suggested it as a joke and then it actually happened.”

Clemmensen said that their motto is to “live each day as it comes” and not get “too caught up” in what they can or cannot become.

The vibe in Melbourne is electric… tonight is a double header to please rock fans the world over; Short Stack and Good Charlotte at Rod Laver Arena.

Short Stack have clearly taken a lot of inspiration from bands like Good Charlotte — Australia’s premier pop rockers opening number ‘We Dance To A Different Disco, Honey’ sounds not unlike something the Madden brothers would put their name to… but hey, if you sound awesome… then why mess with it?

To be honest Short Stack never used to float my boat, but as the years have gone by Andy, Bradie and Shaun have started warm my soul. Even their hair cuts are “growing” on me in recent months.

They’ve got some decent tunes too… ‘Princess’ is killer, and ‘Sway Sway Baby’ sounds great… Short Stack were my perfect side order of fries to my main Big Madden McValue meal.

They’ve graced the cover of Rolling Stones magazine, currently touring Australia with Good Charlotte and as one of Australia’s hardest working bands Short Stack are flipping the bird to their haters and doing what they do best… killing it live.

Although Diviney laughed off the comment on Twitter, Nova FM’s Jarrod Walsh had to ask if things like that P*ss them off when these reviews come in and they aren’t actually about their music. “You know we work hard at playing live and we put on what we think is an awesome show” said Bradie. “We’re not saying you have to like us, we’re just saying admit we’re fu*king awesome live” Diviney added.

Not having time to dwell on the negatives the boys have been hard at work showing off their new album and taking pride in the fact that it sounds so different to their first. Making it a conscious effort to sound different, ‘This is Bat Country’ is about keeping their music relevant to their growing fans, the music scene and more importantly them. “We didn’t want to be the band we use to be” said Diviney “ When we wrote the first album we loved that sort of music but now we don’t particularly. We loved the first album but we just feel like we can relate to ‘Bat Country’ so much more and on so many levels.”

Releasing their first album at 17-years-old, playing their older songs next to their newer ones, to them, feels like almost being two different bands. “Songs on the first album were so thrashy” said Diviney putting it down to the medium of drums, base, guitar. With more time up their sleeve with ‘Bat Country’ the boys got the chance to experiment with full creative license. “We got to record strings at the Opera House and stuff like that. What band gets to do that? So we ceased the day, took the opportunity and ran with it” said Shaun.

Currently on tour with Good Charlotte, it turns out the boys have played on the same bill before “We originally met when we were starting out and still in high school” said Brodie “We did a show with them back in the day and you know they remembered us from there and that was four years ago and they are just such respectful people.”

More than just two bands touring together, Joel and the rest of the Good Charlotte boys have been a big inspiration to Short Stack not just with their music but personally, getting almost life lessons from the guys. “It kinda made us look at the way people should be treated and if someone their level can be so friendly and nice to people then there is no reason why three little sh*ts from Budgewoi shouldn’t as well.”

With a solid album, plans to tour again later on in the year and keeping their hates at an arms distance, we can’t help but feel the boys of Short Stack aren’t going anywhere!

Short Stack vocalist and songwriter Shaun Diviney is commenting on the world of hatred that has been directed toward the Central Coast pop punk band over the past few years. As he readily concedes, it is understandable. They came along as the emo fad had all but crashed into shore as a bland parody of itself and a frequent target of vitriol. Short Stack mined the fashion, approximated the angst and wrapped it in a hooky pop punk shell closer to the juvenile blast of Blink 182 or Green Day.

On their debut album, they declared that Stack is the New Black, and for an army of girls fed up with either the vapid pop world or the draining angst of emo, it was an easy transition to made. Their debut album hit number one and armies of high school-aged girls flooded social networking sites, shopping malls and festival halls; this teenage fandom was worlds away from emo’s insular demeanour. Worst than all of this, was the fact that they made it look easy.

“I think a lot of people didn’t realise, because of the Internet, that we did do the hard yards, we didn’t do the pub circuit. I think a lot of people now realise, we did do a fuck-load of shows.”

The ‘fuck-load’ of shows was facilitated by ceaseless social networking, inventive booking ideas and an encyclopaedic knowledge of the train timetables between Central Coast and Newcastle.

“When we first started we weren’t even 18. We couldn’t play pub gigs. I was sorta the manager; I used to get these shows together and we were playing two, three times a week, it was nuts. Libraries, youth venues, everywhere you can possibly imagine we played it.”

Diviney spent the better part of 18 months balancing managing the band, playing in the band and his HSC. Something had to suffer.

“School sorta came second,” he laughs. “At that point of my life I had to catch the train everywhere, and it was a pain. But you know, it worked out.”

And how! The band’s second album Welcome To Bat Country crashed into stores barely a year after their ARIA chart topping debut and betrayed a more mature sound. Critics, while hardly effusive, admitted that the band’s sound had developed considerably. The main surprise was that people were surprised. Short Stack had long proven themselves capable of tapping into the youth market (of which they are a part of). Diviney completely owns the stylistic shift, claiming it as both necessary and natural.

“It definitely was a conscious decision on my part. The first album was very teenage influenced, the whole pop-punk movement, Blink 182 and stuff like that. Whereas when this album was being written I was listening to a lot of Queen, which inspired the old school ‘70s guitar licks and lots of multi-layered vocals. It was that and the quest to always stay relevant, which is why there are a lot of electronic elements on this one as well….and yeah, I just grew up,” he laughs.

Not willing to stand still, Diviney is already thinking to the band’s next album. He acknowledges the importance of consistently releasing material, and seems restless to make his next move.

“We have this tour with Good Charlotte coming up and we are going to be on the road for the rest of the year, so I figure I may as well get some writing out of the way.”

Having moved on from his “Queen obsession,” Diviney’s interest has been piqued of late by the new Kanye West record My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and The Naked and Famous’ debut release. “That’s the beauty of being on Universal, I get to go there with a shopping trolley and grab a million CDs,” he laughs. He is, however, realistic as to what influences can make their way into his new record.

“I don’t think those albums will make their way into….” he pauses. “It’s Short Stack, ya know.

“I think the challenge now is,” he continues, “we’re kinda stuck in the punk pop genre and it’s going to be hard to consistently up the ante while keeping people happy. It’s hard.”

Comparisons are easily drawn with Silverchair, a young group that threw off their genre-casting to release a series of orchestrated, adult-based albums, amidst an enormous early backlash. Diviney clearly likes this parallel.

“We still need the big Silverchair hit, though,” he considers.

At this rate, there is still plenty of time.

Taking place in an industrial estate in Sydney’s Alexandria, Sydney, the Patron-sponsored awards felt like a huge booze-fuelled warehouse party, with some awards thrown in for good measure.

AN EVENING of rock’n'roll excess threatens to spill over at the Rolling Stone Awards in Sydney tomorrow night.

Back for its second year, the industry bash has become the unofficial warm-up for bands performing at Sydney’s Big Day Out shows.

This year’s guest list includes several international names including Scottish party starters Primal Scream and German metal band Rammstein.

Newer acts like Short Stack, Amy Meredith and Gypsy And The Cat should offer some youthful enthusiasm to the music booze up.

In total, more than 50 bands are set to let their hair down alongside celebrities and guests to see in Australia Day.

The Rolling Stone Awards are given out to trail-blazing artists who have left their mark on popular culture over the past year.

While the majority of prizes like Best Album and Best Live Act are awarded to musicians, others such as Best Male and Best Female are open equally to writers, artists and even politicians.

Some of last year’s winners included Pink, Dave Grohl, The Temper Trap and James Cameron.

Earlier this week Hollywood Treatment caught up with the boys of Short Stack.

Shaun, Bradie and Andy revealed that they will release more tunes and continue touring in 2011.

“It would be no biggie if a member decided to leave”, Short Stack‘s Shaun Diviney says,

“It depends who it is. If it were our drummer, no biggie, we’d replace him, if it were me, I’d be replaced too. But if our logo, Maurice, left we’d be pretty fucked.”

On whether the band’s music has changed:

“Yeah, it was originally about wanting to get girls and fame and drugs, now its about getting girls and fame and drugs. No it hasn’t at all. I wrote about girl’s 4 years ago and I write about girls now”

The Australia Recording Industry Association (stands for ARIA) has released it’s yearly annual ‘End of Year’ charts which rank the top selling singles and albums for that year and Short Stack have definitely dominated in the year of 2010!

The first single “Planets” has earned the 78th position in ‘Top 100 Singles’ and an amazing 9th position in ‘Top 50 Australian Artist Singles’ along side the follow up single “We Dance to a Different Disco, Honey’ in 45th position. Which are all from Short Stack’s second full length album “This Is Bat Country” which was impressively certified gold (in sales) within it’s second week in the charts that gained the 88th position in ‘Top 100 Albums’, respectively.

Short Stack Are Back.

Eclipsing the success of their debut album Stack is the New Black was only one element motivating Short Stack. The main driver for the new album, This Is Bat Country, released this week, was Short Stack’s obsession to prove all their ‘haters’ wrong.

Andy Clemmensen, the pierced, blonde bass player is the first to chime in about their shared goal for This Is Bat Country.

“I think a lot of people in the media are so caught up with all the superficial parts of our band that they missed what our music even was. So we kind of want to be known 100 percent for the music this time round.”

Referring to the tight jeans, trade mark eyeliner and long, styled, hair, Short Stack are loved by swarms of dedicated teenage fans, but for this album, they are looking to build on that fan base.

“There is so much talk about our hair!” drummer Bradie Webbs laughs rolling his eyes.

Lead singer/songwriter Shaun Diviney joins in: “I think that is what separates us from all the other bands, people concentrate on our hair and our jeans and not our music. That’s why we want to become essentially a new band and we tried to eliminate everything that was distracting from the music.”

Eliminating meant cutting off their locks, wiping away the eyeliner and knuckling down for three months to write the new album, but Shaun knows that This Is Bat Country is not everyone’s cup of pop-rocker’s tea.

“Not everyone is going like our new sounds,” he says, “that was part of the intent for this album here too, we wanted to really piss everyone off and step away from what we were known for, because as much as we really hate to admit it, there are people out there who only like us for our hair so we don’t really want those people listening to our music, and to be honest the music is so different this time around that I don’t think those people will be around for much longer.”

With orchestral interludes, layered harmonies, electronic pop and hard rock This Is Bat Country couldn’t be more different from 2008’s Stack is the New Black.

Shaun says that the musicality in the new album is more advanced and taking it up a notch was paramount to staying relevant in the fickle Australian music world.

“We really pushed ourselves as musicians with This Is Bat Country, we sort of changed everything that we were about and now we feel like we are a new band. The last album was standard drums bass and guitar and with this album we have an extreme amount of other elements, you know, string, orchestra and a huge amount of synths.”

Musically the band members all had their own influences, though all three cite Queen as having a big part to play in the album.

“We love Queen, we love Freddie Mercury and that whole drama and theatricality they created. Everything was life or death for Queen and they were about creating a moment rather than simply music…a pop song is just so minimal and one dimensional these days and we wanted to create something that was just so epic and almost attention seeking in a way,” Shaun muses, “I think it has been very hard to ignore.”

While they may be young, Short Stack are hard workers when it comes to promoting this album, which means connecting with the swarms of online fans who helped propel them into the limelight, through My Space, Twitter and Facebook.

“The whole Twitter and Facebook thing has been great,” Bradie says, “but I think that it is really vital that we are doing all the ‘meet and greets’ and maintaining that close relationship with our fans.”

Remaining down to earth seems to a common theme for the trio who have just appeared on the cover of this month’s Rolling Stone- an achievement that any band would die for.

“We just got all the star Rolling Stone treatment, and for a change we actually had a journo give us a good rap after spending time with us and getting to appreciate what we have to offer,” say’s Shaun.

So with experiences like that in their pockets, and a swarm of supporting tours with “the gods of our genre” rockers Good Charlotte, Short Stack are looking forward to what is going to be jam-packed 2011.

“We are just so overwhelmed by all the awesome success we have had lately,” concludes Andy, “but we are looking forward to outselling our last album, staying relevant and keeping the fans going” Andy says.

‘Planets’ the most successful Short Stack single (to-date) has respectfully been ranked at No. 27 on Take40‘s Top 40 biggest music videos of 2010 beating out 3OH!3, The Script, Adam Lambert and other artists for the well-deserved position.

Short Stack’s first single “Planets” off their latest installment ‘This Is Bat Country’ has just been certified platinum with more than 70,000+ sales in digital and physical format. This is Short Stack’s first ever platinum music achievement!

The song currently sits at No. 27 on the overall singles chart while “We Dance To A Different Disco, Honey” is up one stop at No.46 this week. Once again, congrats Short Stack!
